Sweet little beauties, octahedron diamonds

Sweet little beauties…a laurel of daisies, a beautiful solitaire diamond set in golden leaves and a raw octahedron diamond set in a halo of diamonds.
Did you know that octahedron diamonds are actually uncut diamonds in their purest form…just as they come out of the ground. If you look back at Byzantine rings or old Roman rings from the Vatican you will see that the rings were all octahedrons. We adore the raw look & feel of these diamonds

What is the difference between white gold and palladium white gold

palladium white gold ring diamond

Who doesn’t love to display to show off your beautiful new engagement ring? However, wading through the complicated choices of metals for your engagement ring can be a little confusing. There are so many new combinations in the market and certain options that appear similar from the naked eye can actually be totally different. Thus, before you finalize a particular band, just be aware of the point of differentiation among some most popular wedding band metals – White Gold & Palladium White Gold. Let us have a look at both of them:

white gold

Gold is a typical yellow colored metal and thus, other metals are required to be added to give it a white color. To change the hue of the metal and provide it the strength and durability, various alloys work together. These alloys include silver, copper, nickel, zinc and even palladium! The composition and usage of these metals determine the price and style of White Gold. White Gold is available in various carats, ensuring that there is one for every budget. Keep in mind that white gold in its natural form will not be bright white as we are used to seeing when we look at engagement rings. White gold will have a slightly yellow hue.

The only way to get while gold really, really white is to plate it with rhodium. At Rough Luxe we do not recommend plating your ring. First of all if you are going to have rhodium put over the white gold…you may as well just get a rhodium ring. Second, your ring will need to be replated every six months to a year. This usually involves removing the stones, replating and resetting it again. You can see how this would damage the delicate settings over time. If you like a really really true white color we suggest going with Platinum. Of course Platinum is a lot more expensive and a lot heavier. It is also notoriously more difficult to work with and requires a jeweler to have a whole different set of tools to work with it.

The second reason not to select 14k White Gold is that it is usually mixed with nickel to give it its white tone. Many people have nickel allergies and wearing your new engagement ring is not the time you want to discover that.

Palladium White Gold

Which is why our white metal of choice for an engagement ring is Palladium White Gold.  Palladium White Gold is a noble metal and part of the Platinum family of metals. It is one of the rarest metals of the world and is a perfect choice for a wedding band or engagement ring. It has a silvery grey color and a beautiful, soft luster.

Palladium is high in quality, is hypo-allergic (non-nickel based) and strong. It doesn’t tarnish with the passage of time or lose whiteness when worn, and doesn’t need replating.  Palladium White Gold stays natural white without any regular maintenance and care, and is lighter in weight as compared to platinum. It is also a more affordable option as compared to Platinum.

Palladium has emerged as a new trend in the engagement rings and due to its ever growing popularity, it has now been acknowledged as a precious metal. Palladium is almost of the same price as white gold but keeping in mind the ever increasing price of gold, overall Palladium should be less expensive. We love working with Palladium White Gold and can design any customized ring for you. Swooning over this salt and pepper rose cut diamond

Salt and pepper grey diamond

Salt & Pepper diamonds were all the rage this buying season at the Tucson Gem Show which I attend every February. Dealers, miners, artists and stone cutters all converge in the desert and present their best finds for the year.

It is an important place to see whats new, whats up and coming and what stones are hot. Now it is no secret that I have been a big fan of rose cut diamonds…as I chose one for my own engagement ring. I love the old world feel and how they are imperfect, yet beautiful at the same time. And each one is unique…kind of like every marriage. Ok…not just kind of…exactly.

This year Salt & Pepper diamonds were in high demand. If you saw some…you better buy them because if you walked off to think about it…they were gone. I have a lovely client in California who I was on the hunt for the perfect Grey rose cut diamond for a ring I was making for her. And these were perfect.

We set the Salt & Pepper diamond in 14k rose gold and added diamonds around the bezel. It came out so unique and beautiful. She was in love!

How to find her ring size

heart diamond ring, ring size

Careful planning long before popping ‘the question’ can help make the most romantic and unforgettable proposal. While not every proposal is the same and so does each couple’s way of getting engaged, some people want their engagement to be a surprise. This ‘surprise element’ definitely sounds romantic but at the same time makes picking an engagement ring difficult.
So often here at Rough Luxe, people ask us about how to find the ring size of their girlfriend or significant other without them knowing. Well, don’t worry; we have some great tips that can help you choose the perfect engagement ring size for your beloved!

Here are some of tips and tricks that can help you find her ring size without her knowing

  1. Act innocent:

If you are absolutely set to make a surprise proposal but still want to find out her ring size directly from her, act innocent in front of her. Pretend that you need to buy a ring for your relative and casually ask her ring size casually for reference that too in a very subtle manner. You may even purchase an inexpensive ring and have her try it once. This, to an extent, will help you get an idea of the engagement ring size you would need for her.

Tip: Make sure that the pretend recipient hands are similar in size to that of your girlfriend.

  1. Ask Her Friends:

Friends often play a major role in love stories, why not yours? If you know your girlfriend’s friends, ask one of them for her ring size. Chances are that she might already have the insight but in case if she doesn’t, she can get it for you. She may enact for ring shopping for fun with your girlfriend and get her ring finger professionally sized or can find out some other way! Leave it to her friend’s imagination. We’re sure she will have something to help you out!

  1. Ask Her Family:

If you are in good terms with her family and have a comfort level with them, you can involve them in planning the surprise. Her Mom, sister or cousin can easily help you in picking an engagement ring perfect to her size.

Caution: Remind them not to spill the beans out of excitement!

  1. Borrow One Of Her Rings:

You might borrow one of her rings for a day but you need to be careful with this. You got to have a perfect excuse for this or she might get a hint!

Caution: Make sure that the ring you borrow is the one which she wears on a similarly sized finger!

  1. Compare Fingers:

Though this trick can be quite difficult, but if you are really good at estimation, you can go for it. Hold her hand gently into yours and check if her finger is similar in size to any of your fingers. Who knows her ring finger might be of the same size as that of your pinky?

  1. Ask Your Partner:

Well, if you both have discussed marriage earlier as well, ask her directly about her ring size! Don’t worry of the surprise being spoiled! After all, you are not going to tell her when and how you are planning to give it to her. Just ask her you want to have all the information with you to be ready in advance so as to make everything perfect on the actual engagement day. We are sure she will fall in love with you all over again thinking about your love for her!

Thus, these are the tips and tricks that can help you get the perfect engagement size ring for her but the risk is always there as these are just estimations! If you are going for a customized engagement ring, we recommend having the exact ring size as certain designs might not lend themselves to being easily resized. Eternity bands usually fall into this category.

In the end, no matter how you do, who’s around, where are you, just get a perfect sized engagement ring, gather her close and make her wear the ring with all the love.

Colored engagement rings

padparasha sapphire

They say ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ but a growing number of Millennial are choosing colored stones over diamonds for their engagement rings. The craze for colored stones has been such that it won’t be incorrect to say, ‘these stones are truly having their engagement ring moment’. Colored engagement rings have re-emerged as the top-most choice for the modern bride. Whether it is Montana sapphires or the grey diamond, choosing a colorful stone can make your engagement ring truly unique. The rise of colored stone engagement rings signifies that the consumers want to own something really unique. Colored stones have always held an illustrious position in betrothal rings. Couples are also using alternating diamonds with a colored gem to give their engagement ring a new look. A colored gem stone in between with diamonds at both sides is said to signify ‘the couple’s past, present and future.’ Interesting, isn’t it?

There has been a rising trend of preference for Moissanite over Diamonds in the engagement rings for a variety of reasons. About almost one tenth of the price of a diamond, the Moissanite is a shiny white, clear, eco-friendly and conflict-free stone that occurs naturally and is developed by extreme heat and pressure. Though diamonds are slightly harder in texture than moissanite, they both are same in every other aspect. Some people even say that “moissanite has more brilliance and fire than a diamond.”

From Padparasha Sapphires (which means lotus flower) to Montana Sapphires, Gray Diamonds, Raw Diamonds, Tourmalines and Emeralds, these colored gemstones have brightened the world of the so-called ‘Engagement Rings.’ When it is about colored stones, Sapphires outnumber every other gemstone. Sapphires are a class apart and are popularly used in statement jewelry. A sapphire is more ethically mined and gives a truly traditional look. It is incredibly scratch-resistant and strong. Ever since Prince William proposed Kate Middleton with his mother’s 18 carat sapphire ring, a trend for these magical blue gems has increased like never before. They are just perfectly unique and a symbol of royalty. Today, a number of celebrities and royalty alike, have chosen sapphire engagement rings, for a more unique and personal approach. One very interesting fact about sapphires is that even if they are of the same color, no two sapphires are same in color. There will always a variance in shade, however minor that may be! Sapphires come in a rainbow of colors, each with their own symbolic meaning. With a sapphire ring you’re getting a totally customized piece. Your engagement ring is a once in a lifetime purchase, make it personal!

Fancy Montana Sapphires come in a plethora of colors. They are best known for their outstanding color and brilliance. They normally unveil a blue green tint with colors that vary with the light source they are exposed to. These are known as “color changers” in the industry because they change color depending on the light. Padparasha sapphires are very rare and are a vibrant peachy pink and are named after the color of the Lotus Flower. At Rough Luxe we love mixing Padparasha sapphires with 18K yellow gold.

Apart from the traditional royal blue sapphires, these brilliant stones come in other colors too including orange, pink, yellow, apricot, green, and colorless. Like all sapphires, Montana sapphires are tough and relatively scratch-resistant which make them great jewelry stones.

The increase in demand for fancy colored stones has increased the craze for gray diamonds. Even the sophisticated and gray diamond rings are considered chic these days. When one talks about natural colored diamonds, people rarely can come up with anything beyond yellow and pink. This is where gray diamonds rule the uniqueness. The price of the diamond derives the value of a gray diamond ring. As a result, there is an increase in the price of gray diamond rings. In general, the mounting of gray diamonds is done onto white gold or platinum along with white diamonds. Gray diamonds are neutral and elegant in color which makes them just the ideal color stone for even a man’s wedding ring. Thus, with a gray diamond, the couple-to-be can create matching rings and can complement each other. Another big favorite that are popular these days are cognac diamonds or chocolate diamonds

Choosing colored diamond rings or colored stone rings give you a perfect opportunity to give that personal touch to the once-in-a life-time event of your life. You can select your bride-to-be’s favorite color or even her birthstone and gift her that perfect piece of jewelry which will always bind your hearts together. We can help you custom select the stone and the setting. Select an engagement ring from Rough Luxe that truly personifies you love, sentiments and emotion. After all when you are so special, why to have a common engagement ring? Go for the masterpiece that stands out from the crowd! We wish you all the very best!
